My last corporate management position was awhile back.  I worked for a large company that was acquired by Baxter International, the huge healthcare supply company. 

When I was a corporate manager there, the company was composed of 24 divisions.  Each division operated, for the most part, like its own separate company under the “umbrella” of the parent-company.

Leaders in these 24 divisions continually made organizational changes and tried to implement other business improvements. 

In my corporate management role, I had the magnificent opportunity to observe and participate in what many of these leaders did.  It was my job. 

But, also, I felt like I operated a real-life “leadership laboratory” at a major company:  Most importantly, I actually was paid to observe
           +  leaders who succeed
           -  leaders who fail – or do merely moderately well

Now, please keep this in mind.  All these leaders seemed bright and had nice educations.  So, there were a lot of commonalities among leaders in the 24 divisions.

Story Every Leader Needs to Hear

A business school professor was teaching a class in a top-rated MBA program.

At one class session, he put a huge jar on a table for all the students to see.  He carefully put one big rock after the other into the jar.  The professor did this until he no longer could fit any more big rocks into the jar.

He asked the students, “Do you think the jar is full?” 

Students answered, “Yes.”

Then, the professor poured small gravel into the jar.  The gravel filled in spaces between all the big rocks.

Then, the professor asked his students, “Do you think the jar is full now?”

Students answered, “Yes.”

The professor said nothing.

Instead, he poured sand into the jar.  Eventually, all the crevices and spaces between the big rocks and gravel filled-in with sand.

Again, he asked the students if the jar was full.

Again, students enthusiastically answered, “Yes.”

The professor gazed at the jar which was jam-packed with big rocks, gravel, and sand.  The jar certainly looked totally full.

But, then, the professor reached under the table, and grabbed a large pitcher of water.

He poured the water into the jar.  The water seeped between all the big rocks, gravel, and sand.  Eventually, the professor could not add even one more drop of water into the jar.

Then, the professor asked his students, “What did you learn from seeing this large jar filled with big rocks, gravel, sand, and water?”

One eager student enthusiastically replied, “It showed we always need to remember that regardless of how busy we are, we always can squeeze more in.”

The exasperated professor frowned, and quietly stared at his students for one full minute.

Then, the professor slowly stated the following amazingly insightful fact: 
           “This demonstration proves a crucial point every leader always must remember:
           Unless you put in the big rocks first, you never will get them in!”
